Application Development

A number of our, let's say "older" team members, come from engineering backgrounds where quality and efficiency were goals that had to be delivered in their respective industries. Marrying these two objectives together can often be like a "tug of war". We have team members that immersed themselves in Kaizen methodologies and Just In Time (JIT) systems for utilization in large industrial manufacturing companies. Saving 5 seconds off the production time of a die-cast aluminum heat sink was important.

Bottom line savings was the God. Cycle time reduction was the gift given to that God every day.

Then we have the Quality Assurance folks on the other side of the equation. Checking that reduction in production cycle time didn't actually cost the manufacturer more money due to a higher proportion of sub-standard parts.

Purchasing - well they wanted to use less expensive materials... but to arrive at the same end quality of product.

Health and safety department - wanted to ensure all of this was done in a safe environment and to see that production cycle time improvements and different material sourcing options didn't cause health hazards in the workplace.

The QA folks, the production team, purchasing department and the health and safety overlords all had varying immediate goals that were their primary concerns.... but they all had the same ultimate end goal.

More quality widgets produced per day in a safe manner, at a lower material cost; translates to more money showing on the bottom line for the company.
